Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a type of procedure for treating various diseases and injuries/blows to the head, neck and jaw. It can also be conducted to correct Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, a painful affliction of the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems.
Most common oral surgical procedures are surgical extraction of teeth. These include surgical removal of wisdom teeth to other buried and impacted teeth like canines; premolars and supernumerary teeth. Oral surgery also routinely involves dealing with various oral pathology in the mouth. It covers soft tissue tumours to various dental tumours and dental cysts. At times oral cancers are being conjointly treated with other surgeons
Trauma to the face; jaw and teeth are done within oral surgery. Fractures of the jaws
and teeth are managed with other dental disciplines if needed. Finally it covers Orthognathic or facial jaw reconstruction surgeries to move the upper and lower jaws surgically to achieve good function and facial esthetics.
The objective of undergoing oral & maxillofacial is to restore/enhance the overall functionality as well as aesthetics of the maxillofacial region (mouth, jaws, head, and neck).
